Where did the fascinator come from?
Fascinators are not new. Popular theory suggests these items of head wear emerged in the late 17th Century. The Italian influence in making hats and gloves in the early 1500’s in Milan and other northern regions led to the popular use of the term “Milliner”.The development of hats became fashionable and a variety of materials were used to shape and fashion these items. It was in the 18th Century when ladies hair fashion took on elaborate large and tall styles that traditional hats became cumbersome to wear. It was here that we see the first experiments with ribbons, flowers and feathers being used to adorn the fashionable ladies hair.
However hats remained predominant as the preferred headwear for many years. Many argue it was not until the 1950’s and 60’s that women became liberated from the hat. However it is clear that the Burlesque work saw the need for a light weight and well fixed head wear long before this time.
The attraction of a headdress which is small and light, easy to apply and wear, cheap enough to replace as fashion dictates not surprisingly lends itself to our modern way of life.
The current fashion to wear a fascinator can be seen in society events such as Royal Ascot and wedding headwear. This fashion accessory has crossed the Atlantic and is now being sought for weddings, races and prom events in the USA. Its ease of wear, versatility and price make it an absolute must for any Fashionista. |
